Beginner Blacksmiths Butter Cleaver
Beginner Blacksmiths Butter Cleaver
This beginner workshop is a hands-on introduction to blacksmithing built around forging an Oldboy Metal Co. butter cleaver. It’s a fun, approachable way to step into the forge, swing some hammers, and learn how shaping steel actually works.
During the session, you’ll learn core forging fundamentals like heating steel, hammer control, drawing out material, refining shape, and reading how hot steel moves under the hammer. The butter cleaver is chosen on purpose. It teaches real knife-making skills in a low-stakes format, without the added time and complexity of heavy grinding or heat treatment.
You’ll forge the blade yourself from start to finish, shaping a functional cleaver-style butter knife with weight, balance, and character. By the end of the workshop, the blade is finished and buffed, leaving with a clean, polished look and ready for everyday use.
This workshop is a great fit if you’re curious about blacksmithing, want to work with fire and steel, and are looking for a solid first experience at the forge. It also sets you up well for longer knife-making workshops later on, as the forging fundamentals you learn here carry directly into more involved builds if you decide you want more time and depth at the forge.
No prior experience is required.
For safety reasons, workshops are open to participants aged 18+.
Participants aged 16–17 are welcome only with a parent or legal guardian present at all times.

This was such a fun workshop! Lyon was an excellent teacher and lots of fun to work with. I love how my little cleaver turned out. And I especially enjoyed his millennial rock playlist. I'll definitely be doing this again the future!
Wonderful experience. A lot of fun. Highly recommended.
