FAQ
What’s the difference between Pre-Made, Made-to-Order, Custom, and Signature axes?
- Pre-Made ($289): Completed axes from our current stock. You choose from what’s available — no modifications.
- Made-to-Order ($339): You pick the head and handle from our inventory, and we assemble it fresh for you.
- Custom ($423): We forge a head style of your choice, finish it with your custom handle colour, and prioritize your order.
- Signature ($595): A fully custom build made in collaboration with you. Includes engraving, etching, and premium materials.
Are your axes legal for league use?
Yes. All axe models meet specifications for WATL and IATF unless stated otherwise. If you're unsure, we’ll confirm compliance during the order process.
What kind of wood do you use for handles?
We use a consistent, durable handle stock with a trusted finish — designed to handle repeated impact while maintaining performance and aesthetic. Generally, our axes are a pattern layering of sugar maple, with options available such as White Oak, Ash, Hickory, and premium options such as Purpleheart wood.
Can I request a specific color or pattern for my handle?
Yes, for Custom and Signature axes. We offer a variety of handle colours and can match your vision within reason. Just let us know what you’re after.
How long does it take to receive my axe?
- Pre-Made: Ready for pickup or shipping within 3–5 days.
- Made-to-Order: Typically 1–2 weeks.
- Custom & Signature: 2–4 weeks, depending on design complexity and our production schedule. Rush orders may be available — just ask.
Do you ship?
Yes, we ship across Canada and the U.S. Shipping costs will be calculated at checkout. Local pickup in Toronto is also available.
Can I add engraving or custom etching to a lower-tier axe?
Only Signature axes include engraving or etched details by default. For other tiers, special requests may be accommodated for an additional fee — reach out and let’s talk.
Workshop FAQ — Knife Making Courses
Do I need any experience to take these workshops?
No experience is required! Both the stock removal and hand-forged knife workshops are beginner-friendly. You’ll be guided through the entire process, with hands-on instruction and all tools provided.
What’s the difference between the two workshops?
- Stock Removal (2-Day | $525): You’ll shape a knife from flat 1095 steel using grinders and hand tools — no forging involved.
- Hand-Forged Drop Point (2-Day | $750): You’ll forge your own blade from raw O1 tool steel using induction heat and hammering techniques. This workshop is more physical and rooted in traditional blacksmithing.
Can two people work on one knife together?
Yes! For an additional $100, you and a partner can share the experience and co-create one knife. It’s a great option for couples, friends, or parent-child duos (age 16+).
How long is each workshop?
Each course takes place over two full days, but they don’t need to be consecutive. You can book two available dates that work with your schedule — whether back-to-back or spaced out over separate weeks.
What’s included in the price?
- All materials (steel, handle parts, abrasives)
- Use of shop tools and safety equipment
- One-on-one guidance and professional instruction
- A completed knife to take home
- Coffee, tea, and a welcoming forge environment
What should I wear or bring?
- Closed-toe shoes (work boots or leather preferred)
- Natural fiber clothing (cotton, wool — no synthetics)
- Water bottle and lunch/snacks
We provide all safety gear, including gloves, glasses, and aprons.
Where are the workshops held?
All workshops are hosted at the Oldboy Metal Co. forge in Toronto, Ontario. Address and parking info are provided upon registration.
Can I purchase a workshop as a gift?
Yes — gift certificates are available and make a memorable experience gift. Reach out and we’ll set you up with a printable or digital certificate.
What’s your cancellation or rebooking policy?
Cancellations made at least 7 days in advance are eligible for a full refund or transfer to another available date. With less notice, we’ll do our best to accommodate a reschedule, but rebooking fees may apply.

Commissioned to honour a lifetime on stage, this bespoke axe blends rhythm and craft. Built on a solid oak core and wrapped in birdseye sugar maple, its handle echoes the warm, natural tones of a well-loved upright bass—with just a hint of flash, true to the player’s spirit.
