What We Do
Oldboy Metal Co. is a working blacksmith studio based in Toronto, Ontario. We specialize in real, hands-on forging experiences — from beginner blacksmith workshops to private events, team-building sessions, and one-of-a-kind custom commissions. Everything we do is grounded in fire, hammerwork, and the belief that learning to shape steel with your own hands leaves a lasting impact.
Whether you’re joining us for a knife forging class, crafting your first bottle opener, or working with us to bring a custom blade to life, we provide the tools, the guidance, and the space to do something real.
Workshops
Our Toronto blacksmithing workshops are designed for complete beginners, hobbyists, and anyone who wants to step away from screens and into the forge. We keep our class sizes small, our instruction clear, and our atmosphere focused but relaxed. You’ll leave with new skills, a forged object you made yourself, and a stronger sense of what it means to work with heat and intention.
1-Day Knife Making Workshop
This is our most popular workshop for good reason. Over the course of a single day, you’ll forge a full-tang knife from raw 1084 high-carbon steel. This is not a stock removal class and it’s not one of those railway spike gimmicks. You’ll learn how to heat and shape steel using hammer and anvil, guided by a professional blacksmith throughout the process.
Each participant walks away with a finished blade and a detailed guide for tempering it at home using a conventional kitchen oven — completing the heat treatment yourself means the blade is fully yours, start to finish.
This course is perfect for those looking for a knife making workshop in Toronto, or anyone seeking a truly immersive metalworking experience without needing prior skills or experience.
Premium Knife Experience (2-Day Knife Forging Course)
For those who want to slow down and dig in deeper, our two-day premium workshop is the next step. Over two days, you’ll refine your forging technique, explore knife geometry and edge shaping, and finish with a more detailed and dialed-in blade.
The pace is slower, the work more focused, and the result is a knife that reflects the extra time and care. This is the course to take if you’ve always wanted to make a knife that feels like your own, forged from raw steel with deliberate craftsmanship.
Beginner Blacksmithing Workshops
Looking for a blacksmithing course that won’t eat your whole weekend? Our introductory blacksmith classes focus on small, functional projects that teach core forging techniques. You might make a bottle opener, a pendant, an S-hook, or a fire poker — all real metalworking, designed for first-timers who want a clear win and a finished piece to take home.
These sessions are great for creative individuals, date ideas, or small group bookings. They’re also one of the best creative experience gifts in Toronto for someone who wants to try blacksmithing in a supportive setting.
Forging Together: Date Night at the Forge
While we don’t offer a dedicated “date night” workshop, most of our forging experiences can easily be shared by two people working together. Whether you're joining a knife making class or a beginner blacksmithing workshop, we can set you up to work side by side at the anvil, forging a single piece together — one person strikes while the other supports, then you switch.
It’s a great way to mark a birthday, try something new as a couple, or celebrate a milestone — especially the 6th anniversary, traditionally known as the iron anniversary. There's something fitting about shaping red-hot steel with your partner to mark six years of strength and resilience.
If you’re booking with a partner and want to work collaboratively, just let us know. We'll make sure the setup supports the two-person rhythm and the piece you’re creating together.
Our Date Night Blacksmithing Workshop is one of the most unique date ideas in Toronto. It’s hands-on, collaborative, and makes for a great anniversary or gift experience for couples who’d rather make something than sit through dinner again.
Private Events & Team Building
We offer private blacksmithing workshops tailored to birthdays, corporate groups, retreats, and bachelor parties. These events are built around real metalwork, and we adapt each session to the size, skill level, and goal of the group.
Group Blacksmithing Workshops (Beer Opener Sessions)
Our most popular group experience is the Beer Opener Workshop. Perfect for bachelor party activities in Toronto, birthday groups, or friends just looking for something new to do together, this session has everyone forging their own custom bottle opener from high-carbon steel.
It’s rowdy, focused, and gives you something useful to take home — not just a buzz and a receipt. You’ll work in pairs or solo at the anvil, rotating through the forge and finishing your own opener with professional guidance. And Hey, if you brought some "nice refreshing sodas" to the shop, we encourage trying out your finished pieces at the end of your workshop!
Team Building Forge Experiences
If you’re looking for team building in Toronto that actually builds something, we’ll work with you to plan a private forging session for your team. These sessions are great for startups, creative teams, or company retreats. In every case, people leave with a forged object and a new sense of what they’re capable of, and how unity and comradery can forge meaningful relationships.
These workshops are collaborative, physical, and story-rich. They encourage real problem-solving and shared accomplishment and they make for a far more memorable experience than your average ropes course or pizza lunch.
Custom Orders
We also offer custom forging and metalwork commissions. Our specialty is hand-forged knives and axes, made to order for chefs, outdoorspeople, collectors, and anyone who wants a tool with real weight and history behind it. Each blade is forged from high-carbon steel, shaped by hand, and heat-treated with care.
If you have a project in mind — something forged, something personal, something that can’t be bought off the shelf — we’d love to hear it. We work closely with each customer to make sure the final piece matches the vision, the function, and the feel.
Our studio is fully equipped with a modern induction forge, grinders, anvils, a hydraulic press, and everything else a smithy needs, allowing us to turn raw steel into refined, functional work in a space designed for both tradition and precision.
Whether you’re looking to forge your first knife, organize a team event with some fire, or commission a blade with meaning, Oldboy Metal Co. is built for exactly that.

Retirement Axe – For a Jazzman

Two deep etchings complete the tribute: one of their signature and band name, the other a custom silhouette of them mid-sway, lost in the music, stand-up bass in hand.

Commissioned to honour a lifetime on stage, this bespoke axe blends rhythm and craft. Built on a solid oak core and wrapped in birdseye sugar maple, its handle echoes the warm, natural tones of a well-loved upright bass—with just a hint of flash, true to the player’s spirit.

Custom Nakiri Knife
This Nakiri-style chef’s knife was hand-forged from a recycled farrier’s rasp, giving the blade a one-of-a-kind fish scale texture that nods to a working past. Hidden tang handle in ash, with a sugar maple accent that fades from emerald green to honey.

Mini Cleaver 1-of-1
This custom EDC mini cleaver features a gloss-finished handle over layered recycled skateboard veneer—bringing a vivid, one-of-a-kind colour blend to a blade that’s built for daily use and designed to stand out.

Form Meets Function, Forged in Colour.
This bespoke, one-of-a-kind axe was commissioned by a skateboard veneer supplier and built to turn heads and hit targets. The handle showcases experimental grip contours and vibrant layered colour from reclaimed board stock—each line telling a story. Up top, the custom head blends a forge-blackened finish with a mirror-polished bevel, making it as striking on the wall as it is in the lane. A true fusion of art, sport, and steel.

Cleaver-Style Thrower, Forged to Hit.
This straight-handled cleaver-style axe featured a raw forge finish that keeps it gritty and grounded. Built with a durable hickory core wrapped in sugar maple for a smooth, balanced grip. Designed for consistent throws and brutal beauty.
